CodeNEXT, what is it and what do I need to know about it? There is lots to dive in to here! CodeNext is the city’s major rewrite of Austin’s Land Development Code. That code sets the rules and regulations that impact where and what type of development can occur within the city. This rewrite is guided by the Imagine Comprehensive Plan that was adopted by the City Council in 2012. That plan outlines how to develop and sustain communities, taking into consideration issues like mobility, environment, inclusive and affordable housing issues, and streamlining the permitting process, to name a few.
To check out what is happening in your ‘hood, the Austin Business Journal has provided a map that explains proposed zoning that may change up the areas where you work and live.
There are many opportunities to learn more, share your feedback and participate in open house meetings in your area. The first draft received a tremendous amount of community feedback and there are a variety of opinions on the revised version, CodeNEXT 2.0, which was released on September 15th. The 3.0 version is expected to be released in November, with a City of Council vote likely scheduled in April 2018.
We will keep tracking progress with this effort. Let us know if there is an area you want us to explore further.
